Dibond vs Correx: Which Sign Material Should You Choose?
Dibond and Correx are two of the most widely used outdoor sign materials in the UK — and they're frequently confused with each other. Both are rigid, both are waterproof and both are suitable for outdoor use, but they have very different characteristics, very different price points and very different applications. Choosing the right one for your project can make a significant difference to the quality, longevity and cost of your finished signage.
In this guide, we explain what each material is, how they compare and which one is the right choice for your specific signage need.
What is Correx?
Correx — also known as fluted polypropylene, corriflute or coroplast — is a lightweight, rigid plastic board made from two flat sheets of polypropylene connected by a series of hollow flutes running through the middle. Think of it as a plastic version of corrugated cardboard.
Correx is:
- Lightweight — typically around 500–700g per square metre
- Waterproof and weatherproof
- Rigid but flexible enough to be cut and shaped easily
- Cost-effective — one of the most economical rigid outdoor sign materials available
- Available in 3mm thickness (standard for most sign applications)
- Suitable for indoor and outdoor use
- The standard material for estate agent boards, temporary event signage, construction site notices and political campaign boards
Correx has a limited lifespan outdoors — typically 6–12 months before UV exposure and weather cause visible degradation. It is not a premium material — up close, the fluted internal structure is visible on cut edges, and it lacks the rigidity and finish quality of aluminium composite. See our Correx board printing.
What is Dibond (Aluminium Composite)?
Dibond — also known as aluminium composite material (ACM) or aluminium composite panel (ACP) — is a sandwich panel consisting of two thin sheets of aluminium bonded to a solid polyethylene core. The result is an exceptionally flat, rigid and durable panel with a smooth, high-quality surface finish.
Dibond is:
- Significantly heavier than Correx — typically 3–4kg per square metre for 3mm panels
- Fully weatherproof and UV-resistant
- Very rigid — does not flex or warp in outdoor conditions
- Premium finish — smooth, flat surface with no visible internal structure
- Long-lasting — a well-maintained Dibond sign can last 5–10 years outdoors
- Available in 3mm thickness (standard for most sign applications)
- The standard material for permanent and semi-permanent outdoor business signage
Dibond is significantly more expensive than Correx — reflecting its superior durability, finish quality and lifespan. See our aluminium composite signage.
Key Differences at a Glance
- Weight — Correx is much lighter than Dibond. For large signs that need to be moved or temporarily installed, Correx is significantly easier to handle
- Rigidity — Dibond is considerably more rigid. Large Correx panels can flex in strong wind; Dibond holds its shape in all conditions
- Surface finish — Dibond has a smooth, premium surface. Correx has a slightly textured surface and visible fluted edges on cut sides
- Lifespan — Dibond lasts significantly longer outdoors than Correx. For permanent signage, Dibond is the only appropriate choice
- Cost — Correx is substantially cheaper than Dibond. For temporary or short-term signage, Correx offers far better value
- Perceived quality — Dibond looks and feels premium. Correx is functional but does not communicate the same quality
When to Choose Correx
- Temporary event signage — directional boards, entrance signs, wayfinding
- Estate agent boards and property signage with a limited display period
- Construction site notices and temporary planning notices
- Political campaign boards and short-term promotional signage
- High-volume signage where cost per unit is the primary consideration
- Any application where the sign will be displayed for less than 12 months
When to Choose Dibond
- Permanent business signage — fascia signs, building signs, premises identification
- Long-term outdoor advertising displays
- Premium retail and hospitality signage where finish quality matters
- Wayfinding systems intended to last several years
- Any application where the sign needs to look professional and last
- Signage that will be viewed up close where surface quality is apparent
What About Foam Board (Foamex)?
For completeness — foam board (Foamex) is a third rigid sign material that sits between Correx and Dibond in terms of quality and application. Foam board is primarily an indoor material — it is not rated for prolonged outdoor use. It is lighter than both Correx and Dibond and produces an excellent print surface for indoor retail, exhibition and point-of-sale display.
