1. Flyer vs Leaflet: What's the Difference and Which Do You Need?

Flyer or leaflet — the terms are used interchangeably so often that most people assume they mean the same thing. In everyday language, they largely do. But in print, there are meaningful distinctions between the two that affect which format is the right choice for your campaign, your content and your budget.

In this guide, we explain what separates a flyer from a leaflet, when to use each one and how to choose the right format for what you're trying to achieve.

    What is a Flyer?

A flyer is a single, unfolded sheet of paper — typically A6, A5 or A4 — printed on one or both sides. The term comes from the idea of something being "flown" or distributed quickly and in large quantities. Flyers are designed to communicate a single, focused message at a glance — an event, a promotion, a sale, a service — and prompt immediate action.

    Flyers are:

    • Single sheets, flat and unfolded
    • Typically A6, A5 or A4 in size
    • Designed for quick, mass distribution — hand-to-hand, door drops, counter displays
    • Built around one clear message and a strong call-to-action
    • Cost-effective to print in large quantities

    What is a Leaflet?

The term leaflet is broader and can refer to either a flat single-sheet print (in which case it is essentially the same as a flyer) or — more commonly in a print context — a folded document that creates multiple panels. A tri-fold DL leaflet, a bi-fold A5 brochure, a gate-fold promotional piece — these are all leaflets in the folded sense.

    Leaflets are:

    • Either flat single sheets or folded multi-panel documents
    • Capable of carrying significantly more information than a flyer
    • Better suited to content that needs structure — sections, categories, step-by-step information
    • Often used for menus, brochures, information guides and service overviews
    • More considered in their design and content than a typical flyer

    The Practical Differences

    Content volume

A flyer is best for a single, focused message — one event, one promotion, one offer. If you need to communicate more than a few key points, a folded leaflet gives you the panel structure to organise and present more complex information without overwhelming the reader.

    Reading behaviour

A flyer is scanned, not read. The viewer decides in seconds whether to engage or move on. A folded leaflet is picked up, opened and read — the reader has already decided to engage before they see the content. This means folded leaflets can carry more detail without losing the audience.

    Distribution

Flyers are designed for mass distribution — handed out on the street, dropped through letterboxes, left in stacks on counters. Their low cost per unit makes high-volume distribution viable. Folded leaflets are typically distributed more selectively — given to interested customers, included in orders, displayed in targeted locations, or sent by post.

    Perceived value

A well-produced folded leaflet on quality stock feels more considered and premium than a flat single-sheet flyer. For businesses where brand perception matters — professional services, hospitality, retail — a folded leaflet communicates a higher level of investment in the customer relationship.

    Cost

Flat flyers are generally less expensive to print than folded leaflets of the same size, because folding adds a production step. For high-volume distribution campaigns, the cost difference can be significant. For smaller runs where quality matters more than quantity, the difference is less relevant.

    Which Should You Choose?

    Use a flat flyer when:

    • You have one clear message to communicate
    • You need to distribute in large quantities
    • Speed and cost-efficiency are priorities
    • The content fits comfortably on one or two sides of a single sheet
    • You're promoting an event, a sale or a limited-time offer

    Use a folded leaflet when:

    • You need to communicate more detail than a single sheet allows
    • Your content has a natural structure — sections, categories or a sequence
    • You want a more premium feel that reflects positively on your brand
    • You're producing a menu, service guide, brochure or information document
    • The leaflet will be displayed, mailed or given directly to interested customers rather than mass-distributed

    Popular Formats at a Glance
