How to Design for Lightbox Displays: Tips for Backlit Print
Designing for a lightbox display is fundamentally different to designing for standard print. When a graphic is illuminated from behind, colours behave differently, contrast relationships change and design choices that work perfectly on paper can look washed out, uneven or oversaturated when lit. Getting lightbox design right requires understanding how backlighting affects your artwork — and making deliberate design choices that account for it.
In this guide, we cover everything you need to know to design graphics for backlit lightbox displays — from colour and contrast to material choices and common mistakes to avoid.
Understanding Backlit Print
In standard print, light reflects off the surface of the paper or material and back to the viewer's eye. Colours are created by the inks absorbing certain wavelengths of light and reflecting others — this is subtractive colour mixing, and it's why we design in CMYK for print.
In a lightbox display, light is transmitted through the printed material from a light source behind it. The printed material acts as a colour filter — the inks absorb some of the backlight and allow the rest to pass through. This transmitted light creates the glowing, luminous effect that makes backlit displays so visually compelling.
The practical consequence is that colours appear significantly more vivid and saturated when backlit than the same design would look on a standard print. A design that looks balanced and well-calibrated on a standard poster may appear intense or oversaturated on a lightbox.
Colour Considerations for Lightbox Design
Reduce Saturation
As a general starting point, reduce the saturation of colour-heavy areas in your lightbox design compared to what you would use for a standard print. Vivid colours that look rich and balanced on paper will appear considerably more intense when backlit. This is particularly true for reds, oranges and bright blues — colours that can become almost aggressive under backlighting if not adjusted.
Handle Dark Colours Carefully
Dark colours — particularly large areas of very dark or near-black — can cause problems with edge-lit lightbox systems. In edge-lit displays where the LED light source runs around the perimeter of the frame, light travels across the material from the edges toward the centre. Large dark areas in the centre of the display may appear darker or less evenly lit than areas closer to the light source edges.
For edge-lit systems, designs with lighter, more open compositions tend to produce more even illumination than designs with large areas of solid dark colour.
White and Very Light Areas
White and very light areas in a lightbox graphic will glow brightly when backlit — creating a luminous effect that can be striking and beautiful when used deliberately. Be aware that pure white backgrounds will appear very bright, which may not suit all applications. A very slightly off-white (e.g. a warm or cool tint at low percentage) can reduce glare while maintaining the backlit effect.

Use Bold, Vibrant Designs
Lightbox displays reward bold, confident design. The backlighting adds energy and presence to any graphic — designs that are already vibrant and impactful will be elevated further. Conversely, subtle, muted or delicate designs can lose their subtlety under backlighting and may appear flat or washed out.
Imagery with strong colour contrast — bold photography, graphic illustrations, high-contrast typographic designs — typically performs better on lightbox displays than nuanced, complex imagery.
Frame Visibility
For SEG fabric lightbox systems, the internal frame structure may be faintly visible through the fabric material when subject to strong backlighting — particularly at the edges of the frame where the aluminium extrusion is closest to the surface. This is a characteristic of all fabric lightbox systems rather than a defect.
To minimise frame visibility:
- Use busy, detailed designs with colour variation distributed across the graphic rather than large areas of solid colour where frame lines would be most visible
- Avoid placing continuous horizontal or vertical lines directly over the frame positions
- Position the lightbox where strong direct lighting from above or behind is minimised

Artwork Material for Lightbox Displays
Standard paper stocks are not suitable for lightbox display — they are opaque and will not transmit backlight. Lightbox graphics require specialist translucent materials:

Artwork Setup for Lightbox Displays

- Resolution: 300dpi for smaller lightbox sizes; 150dpi acceptable for larger format displays. See our guide: Understanding DPI for Print
- Colour mode: CMYK
- Format: PDF with fonts outlined or embedded
- Consider requesting a proof — for colour-critical lightbox applications, a physical proof viewed on the actual lightbox system is the most reliable way to check colour and illumination before committing to full production
