1. How to Use White Ink in Print Design: A Practical Guide

    White ink is one of the most useful and most misunderstood tools in print design. Standard CMYK printing uses four inks — Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black — and relies on the white of the paper to produce light tones and white areas in a design. This works perfectly on white or near-white stocks. But when you're printing on dark, coloured or transparent materials, there is no white paper to fall back on — and this is where white ink becomes essential.

    In this guide, we explain when and why white ink is used, what it can and cannot do and how to set up your artwork correctly when white ink is required.

    Why Standard CMYK Can't Print White

    In CMYK printing, white is not a colour that is printed — it is the absence of ink. White areas in a CMYK design are simply areas where no ink is applied, allowing the white paper beneath to show through. This is why CMYK printing on white paper can produce bright, clean whites — the paper itself provides the white.

    On a dark, coloured or non-white substrate, this approach fails entirely. If you print a design with white text on what you intend to be a dark background, the "white" text areas will simply be unprinted — revealing whatever colour the material beneath actually is. On a black chalk board, those "white" areas would appear black. On brown kraft paper, they would appear brown.

    White ink solves this by applying a physical white pigment — in the same way that coloured inks apply coloured pigments — directly to the substrate surface.

    When is White Ink Used?

    Dark and Coloured Paper Stocks

    For designs on dark, coloured or kraft paper stocks where white elements — text, logos, graphic elements — are part of the design. Without white ink, those elements would disappear into the background colour of the stock.

    Chalk Board Printing

    Transparent and Clear Materials

    For printing on transparent or clear materials — clear plastic business cards, window graphics and similar — white ink is used as an underprint beneath colour elements to make them opaque and visible, or as a design element in its own right.

    White on Kraft and Brown Paper

    For packaging, swing tags and paper bags on brown kraft stock, white ink allows white design elements — logos, text, graphic elements — to appear clearly against the natural brown background.     Characteristics of White Ink

    White ink behaves differently to standard CMYK inks and has specific characteristics to be aware of:

    • Opacity varies — white ink is not always fully opaque in a single pass. On very dark substrates, multiple passes may be required for full opacity, or the ink may appear slightly translucent in thin areas
    • Resolution limits — very fine detail in white ink — thin lines, small text — may not reproduce as crisply as the same elements in standard CMYK. Minimum recommended line weight for white ink is typically 0.5pt; minimum font size is typically 6–8pt
    • Slight yellow tint — white ink can have a very slight warm or yellow tint rather than a pure brilliant white, particularly on some substrates. This is a characteristic of the ink rather than a defect
    • Adhesion — white ink adhesion varies by substrate. Always check substrate compatibility before specifying white ink on unusual materials

    Setting Up Artwork with White Ink

    Setting up artwork correctly for white ink printing requires a specific approach — white ink must be indicated separately from your CMYK design:

    Creating a White Ink Layer

    In Adobe Illustrator or InDesign, create a separate spot colour swatch named "White" (or as specified by your printer). Apply this swatch to all design elements that should be printed in white ink. This layer is supplied separately from your CMYK artwork — either as a separate page in your PDF or as a separate file.

    White as Underprint vs Overprint

    White ink can be used in two ways:

    • Overprint — white ink applied on top of the substrate, appearing as white design elements
    • Underprint — white ink applied beneath CMYK colours, creating an opaque white base that allows the CMYK colours above it to appear accurately on dark substrates

    Specify clearly which approach is required when submitting your artwork.

    Minimum Sizes

    • Minimum line weight: 0.5pt
    • Minimum font size: 6–8pt (larger for reversed-out text on complex backgrounds)
    • Avoid very fine detail — hairlines and intricate patterns may not reproduce cleanly in white ink

    Design Tips for White Ink

    • Embrace the limitation — white ink works best with bold, clean designs rather than complex photorealistic imagery. Use it for logos, typography and graphic elements rather than attempting photographic reproduction
    • Contrast is everything — white ink is most impactful on very dark backgrounds. The darker the substrate, the more dramatic the white ink effect
    • Consider the aesthetic — white ink on kraft or uncoated dark stock has a distinctive, premium aesthetic that suits certain brands very well. Don't use it just because you can — use it because it serves the design
    • Test before full production — for critical jobs where white ink accuracy matters, request a proof before committing to a full production run

    Proof Check Before Submitting

    • Confirm white ink layer is correctly set up as a spot colour named as specified
    • Check minimum line weights and font sizes in white ink elements
    • Confirm whether white is required as overprint or underprint
