1. Magnetic Signs vs Vehicle Wraps: Which is Right for Your Business?

If you want to turn your vehicle into a marketing tool, you broadly have two options — magnetic signs or vehicle wraps. Both put your brand on the road. Both generate impressions every time you drive or park. But they work in very different ways, suit very different situations and come at very different price points. In this guide, we compare the two options honestly so you can make the right choice for your business.

    What Are Magnetic Signs?

Magnetic vehicle signs are printed panels on flexible magnetic sheet that attach to any ferrous (steel) surface on your vehicle. They are typically used in pairs on the front doors or rear panels of a van or car. They attach and remove cleanly — you can put them on when you're working and take them off when you're not, or swap between vehicles as needed.

At Dipol Print, our magnetic signs are printed on 0.85mm white gloss magnetic vinyl using the EFI VUTEk H5 — producing weatherproof, UV-resistant graphics that look professional and hold up to repeated use outdoors. See our magnetic signs.

    What Are Vehicle Wraps?

A vehicle wrap is a large-format vinyl graphic applied directly to the painted surface of the vehicle — either covering the entire vehicle (full wrap) or selected panels (partial wrap). The vinyl is heat-applied by a specialist installer to conform to the contours of the vehicle body. A full wrap effectively replaces the visible painted surface of the vehicle with a printed design.

Vehicle wraps are not a product we produce at Dipol Print — they require specialist installation by a vehicle graphics installer. However, we produce magnetic signs as a practical, flexible alternative for many of the same use cases.

    Key Differences

    Permanence

This is the most fundamental difference between the two options. A vehicle wrap is a semi-permanent application — once applied, it stays on the vehicle until professionally removed. A magnetic sign is entirely removable and reusable — attach it when you need it, remove it when you don't.

For businesses that use their vehicle exclusively for work — a dedicated company van, for example — permanence is not a problem. For sole traders and small businesses that use the same vehicle for work and personal use, the ability to remove signage at the end of the working day or when taking time off is a significant practical advantage.

    Cost

Magnetic signs are substantially less expensive than vehicle wraps — both for the initial production and over time. A pair of magnetic door signs can be produced for a fraction of the cost of even a partial vehicle wrap. For small businesses and sole traders, magnetic signs provide the marketing benefit of vehicle signage at an accessible price point.

Full vehicle wraps — covering the entire vehicle — can cost several thousand pounds including design and installation. Partial wraps (rear doors and selected panels) are less expensive but still represent a significant investment compared to magnetic signs.

    Flexibility

Magnetic signs can be moved between different vehicles — useful for businesses with multiple vehicles or for sole traders who change vehicles periodically. They can also be updated or replaced when your branding, contact details or services change, without any commitment to a new vehicle.

Vehicle wraps are fixed to a specific vehicle. If you change your branding, get a new vehicle or want to update your contact details, the wrap needs to be professionally removed and replaced — at significant cost.

    Coverage and Visual Impact

A full vehicle wrap creates a far more dramatic visual impression than magnetic signs. A fully wrapped vehicle is a genuine head-turner — the entire vehicle becomes a branded canvas. For businesses where maximum visual impact and brand awareness are the primary objectives, a full wrap delivers results that magnetic signs cannot match.

Magnetic signs provide good brand visibility on the panels they cover — typically the front doors — but leave the majority of the vehicle unbranded. They are a practical marketing tool rather than a statement piece.

    Surface Compatibility

Magnetic signs only adhere to ferrous metal surfaces — they will not attach to aluminium panels, fibreglass, plastic bumpers or most modern van rear doors which often use non-ferrous materials. Always check which panels on your specific vehicle are ferrous before ordering magnetic signs.

Vehicle wraps can be applied to virtually any vehicle surface regardless of material, including curved panels, bumpers and mirrors.

    Paint Protection

A vehicle wrap actually protects the underlying paintwork from minor stone chips and UV fading — a benefit that has made wraps increasingly popular even on personal vehicles. When the wrap is eventually removed, the paintwork beneath is typically in better condition than exposed areas.

Magnetic signs, if left in place for extended periods without removal, can trap moisture and grit underneath which may cause localised paint damage. For best results, remove magnetic signs regularly, clean both the sign and the vehicle surface and allow both to dry before reapplying.

    Which Should You Choose?

    Choose magnetic signs if:

    • You use your vehicle for both work and personal use and want to remove signage outside working hours
    • You want a cost-effective entry point into vehicle advertising
    • You need flexibility to move signage between vehicles
    • You're a sole trader or small business where budget is a primary consideration
    • You want the option to update your signage easily when branding or contact details change

    Choose a vehicle wrap if:

    • The vehicle is used exclusively for business and will carry branding at all times
    • Maximum visual impact and brand awareness are the priority
    • You have a dedicated marketing budget for vehicle branding
    • The vehicle panels you want to brand are non-ferrous and won't accept magnetic signs
    • You want a premium, head-turning branded vehicle that makes a strong impression
