1. Which Business Card Finish is Right for You?

The finish on your business card is the first thing someone notices when they pick it up — before they read your name, your title or your contact details. It communicates something about your brand through touch and sight in the first fraction of a second. Choose the right finish and your card feels like a natural extension of your brand. Choose the wrong one and even a well-designed card can feel off.

In this guide, we walk through every business card finish available at Dipol Print — what each one looks and feels like, which brands and industries it suits best, and when to choose one over another.

    Gloss Lamination

Gloss lamination applies a shiny, reflective coating to the surface of the card. It's the most popular lamination finish for business cards and produces the most vivid, saturated colour reproduction — colours genuinely pop on a gloss laminated card in a way they don't on uncoated or matt stock.

Best for: Bold, colourful designs; image-led cards; brands that want maximum visual impact; industries where energy and vibrancy are part of the brand — events, hospitality, retail, creative agencies.

Consider if: Your design relies on strong colour reproduction and you want the most cost-effective premium finish.

Avoid if: Your brand is understated, luxury or professional services — gloss can read as less premium than matt in those contexts.

    Matt Lamination

Matt lamination gives a smooth, non-reflective surface with a sophisticated, refined feel. Colours appear slightly softer than on gloss but the overall impression is more premium and considered. Matt laminated cards don't catch the light in the same way as gloss — they demand attention through quality rather than shine.

Best for: Professional services, law firms, financial advisers, architects, consultants, luxury brands, anyone who wants their card to feel authoritative and premium without ostentation.

Consider if: You want a finish that pairs well with spot UV — the contrast between the matt surface and the high-gloss spot UV is at its most dramatic on a matt base.

Avoid if: Your design relies on very vibrant, saturated colours that need gloss to show at their best.

    Velvet Lamination

Velvet lamination — sometimes called soft-touch lamination — produces an extraordinarily soft, almost velvety surface that is unlike any other business card finish. The moment someone touches a velvet laminated card, they notice it. It feels premium in a way that is immediately apparent and genuinely memorable.

Best for: Any brand that wants to make a strong tactile impression — luxury retail, beauty, wellness, hospitality, high-end professional services. Also exceptionally effective for creative professionals whose card is itself a demonstration of their taste and attention to detail.

Consider if: You want the most memorable finish available. Velvet lamination paired with spot UV on your logo is one of the most impactful business card combinations possible.

Note: Velvet laminated cards show fingerprints more readily than gloss or matt — this is a characteristic of the finish rather than a defect.

    Spot UV

Spot UV applies a raised, high-gloss varnish to precisely defined areas of the card — typically a logo, company name or graphic element — creating a striking visual and tactile contrast against the matt or velvet laminated surface beneath. The glossy areas catch the light differently as the card is tilted, drawing the eye directly to whatever you've chosen to highlight.

Best for: Any brand that wants to highlight a specific design element — particularly logos and company names. Works on virtually any design style, from minimal and corporate to bold and creative.

Consider if: You want maximum impact from a single finishing element. Spot UV on a velvet laminated card is one of the most impressive combinations available at any price point.

Important: Spot UV requires a separate artwork layer showing exactly where the UV should be applied. Minimum recommended size is 1pt line weight and 10pt font. See our full guide: How to Design Business Cards with Spot UV

    Foil Embellishment

Foil embellishment applies metallic foil — gold, silver or other colours — to selected design elements. Where spot UV adds a gloss texture, foil adds a genuine metallic shimmer that is visually distinct and immediately communicates luxury. Foil works particularly well on dark backgrounds and uncoated stock, where the metallic element contrasts most dramatically with the surrounding surface.

Best for: Luxury brands, premium professional services, anyone who wants their card to communicate the highest level of quality. Gold foil on uncoated stock with a dark background is a timeless, premium combination.

Consider if: Your brand identity already uses gold or silver as a brand colour, or if you want the most visually striking embellishment option available.

Important: Foil requires a separate vector artwork layer. Supply as solid 100% black shapes on a separate PDF page. Minimum 1pt line weight, minimum 10pt font size. See our foiled business cards.

    Triplex (Triple Layer)

Triplex cards are a structural rather than surface finish — three layers of card stock bonded together with a vibrantly coloured core layer visible on all four edges. The result is a super-thick card that feels immediately and dramatically different to any standard card, with a coloured stripe running around the perimeter that is visible whenever the card is held or viewed edge-on.

Best for: Any brand that wants maximum physical impact. The triplex card is the boldest statement available — it communicates confidence, quality and distinctiveness from the moment it's picked up. Popular with creative professionals, luxury brands and anyone who wants their card to be the most memorable in the wallet.

Consider if: You want your card to be physically unlike anything else the recipient has received. The coloured core is itself a design element — choose a core colour that complements or contrasts with your brand palette.

    Uncoated — No Lamination

Uncoated stock with no lamination gives a natural, matte, slightly textured surface that is entirely writeable. It's the most understated option — but understated is not the same as unimpressive. On the right stock (350gsm uncoated or Rives Shetland), an unlaminated card has a quality and tactility that many glossy cards cannot match. It's also the best base for foil embellishment, where the natural surface provides the strongest contrast with metallic elements.

Best for: Creatives, consultants, architects, designers, therapists and any professional who wants a card that communicates considered simplicity. Also the natural choice for eco-conscious brands where a more natural material feel is part of the brand positioning.
