Frequently Asked Questions

What does NCR stand for?

NCR stands for No Carbon Required. NCR paper is a type of carbonless copy paper that uses a chemical coating to transfer the impression of writing or printing from the top sheet to the sheets below — creating instant duplicate, triplicate or quadruplicate copies without the need for messy carbon paper.

What is the difference between 2-part, 3-part and 4-part NCR books?

The number of parts refers to how many copies are produced with each set. A 2-part (duplicate) book produces two copies — a white original and a pink copy. A 3-part (triplicate) produces three copies — white, yellow and pink. A 4-part (quadruplicate) produces four copies — white, blue, yellow and pink. Choose the number of parts based on how many copies you need to distribute — for example, one for the customer, one for your records and one for your accounts department.

Can I get sequential numbering on my NCR books?

Yes — sequential black numbering is available as an option. If you require numbering, please supply two artwork files — one for print and one clearly showing the intended position of the numbering as a guide. Sequential numbering is particularly useful for invoice books and receipt books where tracking individual transaction numbers is important.

Why is the safe zone 20mm for NCR books?

The larger 20mm safe zone is required because NCR books are bound and perforated — the binding and perforation at the edge of the book mean that a larger area along the bound edge must be kept clear of important content. Always keep all text, logos and critical design elements well within the 20mm safe zone boundary.

Can NCR books be printed double-sided?

Yes — double-sided printing is available. However, due to the semi-translucent nature of NCR paper, we recommend using no more than 70% black for any content on the reverse side to prevent show-through from the front.

I'm a tradesperson and need invoice or job sheet books — what would you recommend?

A 2-part or 3-part A5 NCR book is the most popular choice for tradespeople — compact enough to carry on site, with duplicate or triplicate copies for the customer, your records and your accounts. Add sequential numbering for easy invoice tracking. Order online and collect from our Brighton & Hove print shop or choose UK-wide delivery.

What is the difference between an NCR book and a standard notepad?

A standard notepad produces a single copy of whatever is written on it. An NCR book automatically produces two, three or four copies simultaneously using carbonless copy paper — essential for any business transaction where both parties need a record of what was agreed, ordered or paid. See our custom notepads if a single-copy format is all you need.

Can I collect from your Brighton shop?

Yes — order online and collect from our print shop at 97 St James's Street, Brighton BN2 1TP. Standard turnaround is 3-4 working days.

Do you deliver across the UK?

Yes — we offer UK-wide delivery on all orders. Select your preferred delivery option at checkout. Orders are dispatched from our Brighton & Hove print shop.
