What Is a Stapled Booklet?

Stapled booklets — also known as saddle-stitched booklets — are bound using lightweight staples along the spine. This simple, effective binding method allows the booklet to open and lie flat, making it ideal for menus, catalogues and reference materials that need to be easy to read and use. Compared to perfect bound books, stapled booklets support a lower page count and are more cost-effective for shorter publications.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a stapled booklet and a perfect bound book?

Stapled booklets are bound with staples along the spine — a lightweight, cost-effective method that allows the booklet to open and lie flat. Perfect bound books have a glued flat spine, giving a more substantial, book-like appearance and supporting a higher page count. Stapled binding is ideal for shorter publications such as menus, brochures and event programmes. See our perfect bound books for longer publications. For more guidance, read our stapled vs perfect bound guide.

Why does the page count need to be a multiple of 4?

Stapled booklets are printed on sheets of paper that are folded in half and nested together — each sheet creates four pages (front, inside front, inside back and back). This means your total page count must always be a multiple of 4 — for example, 8, 12, 16, 20 pages and so on. If your content doesn't fill a multiple of 4, add blank pages to make up the count.

Do I need to supply artwork as spreads?

Yes — artwork for stapled booklets must be supplied as spreads showing two pages side by side as they will appear when the booklet is open, not as individual single pages. Download our free templates for the correct spread layout for your chosen size. See our guide: How to Set Up Spreads for Print.

What size booklet should I choose?

A5 is the most popular and versatile booklet size — easy to distribute, comfortable to read and suitable for most content types. A4 is better for detailed catalogues and brochures where more space per page is needed. Square formats (148mm or 210mm) give a distinctive, modern look popular with lifestyle brands, lookbooks and premium menus. DL is ideal for slim, elegant brochures designed to fit envelopes for direct mail.

Can I add spot UV or foil to my booklet cover?

Yes — spot UV and foil embellishments are available for booklet covers. These are applied to the outer cover only and work best on laminated covers where the contrast between the laminate surface and the embellishment is most pronounced. Supply your spot UV or foil artwork as a separate vector layer indicating the exact position of the embellishment.

I need a menu for my restaurant or bar in Brighton — what would you recommend?

A5 or A4 stapled booklets on silk stock with gloss lamination are the most popular choice for Brighton & Hove's restaurants and bars — professional, easy to handle and durable enough for daily use. For a more premium menu, consider a square format with velvet lamination and spot UV on the cover. Visit our Brighton print shop on St James's Street for samples and advice.

Can I collect from your Brighton shop?

Yes — order online and collect from our print shop at 97 St James's Street, Brighton BN2 1TP. Standard turnaround is 3-4 working days.

Do you deliver across the UK?

Yes — we offer UK-wide delivery on all orders. Select your preferred delivery option at checkout. Orders are dispatched from our Brighton & Hove print shop.
